Pirates of the Caribbean and a ship that sunk
Friday night, off I went to watch Pirates of the Caribbean. Have to say, I was pretty excited about that. Love Jonny Depp. 2:45 hours later, I left the movie pretty disappointed. The film was long, boring, with a confusing story line. Made me think about a commom mistake to business owners: when they think they should keep coming up with new products all the time. They run the danger of missing the point like this film did. There is a moment in the film when a woman is shot in the head in a close -up. This film attracts a bunch of kids, some very very young. Besides, in this kind of film, that you watch to be entertain, you don't want to see death right in your face, they happen in a very subtle way, when they happen. Is this the kind of entertainment we need them to see? Don't we have enough kids that think shooting innocents is ok? I guess this time Pirates of the Caribbean forgot who their audience is. They could not communicate well to them, or to anyone else. Another very commom mistake in business. The main mistake was not being able to tell a story in a way it could engage the audience. They left the anti-hero in the back and filled the film with senseless action. Looked full of effects and with a lot of action, but if you squeeze it, you get a lot of dirty teeth and no content. NO STORY. Have you checked later if the story you tell about your business is good and relevant? If it engages your audience? Are you sure you know who you are talking to? Are you filling spaces with nice design and a lot of bla, bla, bla? Don't let your business go down like this film did. It is not about creating something new all the time, it is about telling a good story to the right audience.

Death of Advertising
Still thinking about the event with Seth Godin and how I enjoyed. He mentioned several times the fact that advertising, the way it is today is dead. This is a point I always talk about with my clients and how easy it is to spend a lot of money and not get anything in return. If you think about new small businesses, it can be really one of the main reasons they go out of business after a little while. This is really sad. The thing is, they relate advertising with the potential of growing their business. It is just the common mindset. There is no point in trying to be in front of an audience that has no clue who you are in the first place. Your work has to be in positioning yourself first to that audience and then, and only then, you could think of using advertising. Here we are with the man. Have to say, I was exausted after the event, but went home and started reading his new book The Dip. If you think things ended when he left, you need to read Phil's blogHave you noticed he was wearing a tie with BuzzBooster's colors? Some people did ask us about that!

Great afternoon with a marketer that doesn't lie
The event with Seth Godin was great. We had hundreds of people there and as usual he gave a great talk. I learned a lot but I have to say that one thing I though was great was when he said that people need to know how to tell a good story. How important it is today to learn how to tell a story. This is the WordMob team. Good job guys!

Comcast Customer Service, What's that?
So, as you know we moved to a new office. Some days before we did, we started getting postcards from Comcast saying they had internet service in our area (which they didn't before). We work with the internet 24 hrs, so we thought would be a good thing to switch services. We are careful people, we called before to be sure they really had the service. 3 times actually. Last time we talked to a business service representative who said she would have a technician go to the area and double check. Later she called and said all was fine. COMCAST HAD INTERNET SERVICE IN THIS AREA. Awesome we were thrilled! We went ahead and sent in the papers and canceled the other service with Qwest. Waited 3 weeks for Comcast to come and install, just to find out that they couldn't do it because there were no cables close to this area. Remember we double checked with them! No no no remember that they sent out a technician to come check! He clearly didn't do his job... 3 weeks waiting and they never saw there were no cables, they even double checked with a technician before! Pathetic. All we got was : They can't do anything, too bad you got the wrong information. So sorry. They said they won't do anything because there are no other businesses with Comcast in this building. (Maybe because they don't have the option???????!!!) We not only still don't have the internet, we are going to have to pay again for the installation fee with Qwest. Not to mention the trouble it was to cancel the service we had in the first place! Also, the fact that we're a business that fully relies on internet service doesn't weigh in a bit. Their incompetence to implement an effective direct marketing campaign really show's through. Why in the world are the businesses in this area receiving postcards stating that there is service when there is not?! Of course the only person having a loss here is me, who cares? Their mistake, my loss! Why should they care about customers anyway? Why do they need customers? Fact is, this has done damage to my business. Why should I ever choose to do business with them again?

Marketing: Consumer in control?
I've to admit, I love to eat a cheese egg bacon buscuit at Mc Donald's for breakfast. I don't care much about the other stuff, but I like to get my breakfast there. well, Mc Donald's decided that people should have their breakfast until 10:30 am, on Saturdays and Sundays until 11am. Usually if you are 3 minutes late, you cannot get the breakfast. This includes the fact that if the line is too big, because there is only one girl to get the orders and fulfill them, and time goes by, you're not going to get your breakfast either. Their fault, my hunger! So there is no half an hour more in bed on Sundays if I want to eat my bacon egg and cheese buscuit there. Today a lady came at 10:50 am. She wanted to have lunch. Nope, no, cannot, have to wait 10 more minutes. No eating lunch here before 11am. Well, she waited, but she was furious, a very unsatisfied customer. And why? because of 10 minutes? We read a lot that the consumer today is in control, about having businesses that are an experience etc. But try to get the breakfast your way at McDonald's. Would it be too difficult to adapt the production line and serve breakfast and lunch at whatever time the customer decides to have it? I don't think so. Since I eat there many days a week, I see this happen over and over again. I can only say one thing: this part of their marketing strategy is broken, needs to be fixed. Let people eat their breakfast and lunch when they feel like, not when you think they should eat.

Clown Fish Rule!
Today I learned something really cool. We were looking for an aquarium to put in our office. We wanted a salt water aquarium with clown fish, just because we think they are cute and colorful. We were at this store talking to the owner about it. By the way, he was very nice and although we told him we were just researching the possibility, he gave us all kinds of information. What he told me that I didn't know is that at first all clown fish are male. You put them in the aquarium and when time comes, the dominant clown fish will choose its partner and will become a female. Got it? The dominant fish turns into a female. Wow, I'm so in love with clown fish now! That is what I call Eveolution.

Intuition or Analytics?
69 % of companies planning online campaigns use intuition in place of analytics. Not a very good approach if you ask me. The online world is about testing and tracking. You do not go very far guessing here.

Brand Loyalty
Did you know that... 67% of consumers believe that the brands they know don't keep their promises? 89% of consumers feel no personal connection with the brands they buy? 47% of consumers feel there's no real difference between competing brands? Research shows that the greatest factor impacting customer loyalty is brand consistency—yet so many companies can't deliver on this.

No future for paid video downloads
A recent Forrester survey showed that only nine percent of online adults have ever paid to download a movie or TV show. Furthermore, an analysis of these consumers showed they are a niche of media junkies willing to spend heavily on such content; they do not represent the vanguard of a rush by mainstream consumers. Without mainstream viewers joining the party, the video download market will not grow fast enough to support the ambitions of all the companies involved

Marketing your Blog
Trying to figure out why some blogs do better than others even though both blogs provide intriguing content? The reason can be summarized in one word: marketing. If you blog on a regular basis and have high quality content then you have just as much potential for success as all the other blogs. While there are a few other factors contributing to the success of a blog like a valuable niche for example, marketing is the key differentiator. Ways to market: Put on your business cards Have the address of your blog in your signature file Submit to social bookmarking networks Add pictures and videos There are more ways, can you tell me some?

Colors and branding
There is a lot to talk about branding and how to use colors. Here you'll find some simple guidelines. The way we view those colors psychologically triggers how we feel and think. They even influence us to buy. Your color choice will project a message about your business. What emotions are you stirring with your brand? Are they the right emotions to reach your target audience? PINK – Pink is considered to be a very feminine color. It represents gentleness, romance, well being and innocence.PURPLE – Purple represents royalty and luxury. In darker shades, it’s considered a wealthy color. It suggests spirituality and sophistication. In paler shades, such as lavender, it’s feminine and romantic. WHITE – White is associated with innocence, purity, peace and contentment. It’s considered clean and sterile. It’s cool and refreshing. White can have a calming, stabilizing influence. BLACK – Black is the ultimate power color. It suggests strength, potency, authority, boldness, seriousness, stability and elegance. It’s distinguished and classic, great for creating drama. Black has more weight than other colors. Too much can be ominous. Gray or Silver – Gray can be associated with conservative qualities and considered traditional. Business-wise, it symbolizes high tech and suggests authority, practicality, earnestness and creativity. RED – Red stimulates many kinds of appetites. Red commands attention, alerts us and creates a sense of urgency. It’s considered the sexiest of all colors. Red symbolizes heat, fire, blood, love, warmth, power, excitement, energy, strength, passion, vitality, risk, danger and aggressiveness. Financially, it’s associated with debt. YELLOW – Yellow is the sunshine hue and is a spiritual color. Yellow represents a warning, but it can also bring happiness and warmth. The most preferred yellows are the creamy and warm ones. Bright yellow can be irritable to the eye in large quantities. Yellow speeds metabolism. It’s often used to highlight or draw attention. GOLD – Gold suggests wealth. It’s considered to be very classy.BLUE – Blue is the favorite color of many businesses. It suggests sanctuary and fiscal responsibility. It inspires confidence. It is the most popular and second most powerful color. Darker shades are authoritative. Dark and bright blues represent trust, security, faithfulness and dignity. Paler shades can imply freshness and cleanliness, although they can imply weakness. GREEN – People associate green with the color of money, as well as nature. Olive greens are associated with health and freshness — a good choice for environmental concerns. Green suggests fertility, freedom, healing and tranquility. Green represents jealousy. Businesses use it to communicate status and wealth. Green is a calming, refreshing color that is very easy on the eyes. BROWN – Brown is associated with nature and the earth. Dark browns represent wood or leather. Brown and shades of cream are associated with warmth and coziness. Brown suggests richness, politeness, helpfulness and effectiveness. It is solid, credible, mature and reliable. Light brown implies genuineness. ORANGE – Orange is associated with vibrancy and the tropics, as well as warmth and contentment. It can instill a sense of fun and excitement. It implies health. It suggests pleasure, cheer, endurance, generosity and ambition. It can make an expensive product seem more affordable. Shortcuts for marketers
A handy list of keyboard shortcuts for do-it-yourself marketers. In your business correspondence and marketing materials, do you ever need to use symbols that aren't on the computer keyboard? Like © for Copyright or the Trademark symbol or how about a real bullet instead of an asterisk?Maybe you used the Torino Olympic Games to draw attention to some aspect of your business and needed to make French and German accents such as à, é or ü.(1) In Microsoft Word (and Publisher), there's a nifty way to insert symbols for copyright, trademark, cents and French, German and Spanish accents. You never again have to use e', when what you really want is é. On the top of the screen of your open Word document, you'll see the headings: File, Edit, View, Insert, Format, etc. Click on "Insert" and on the drop-down list, click on "Symbol." A symbol box will pop up. Click on the symbol you want to insert into your text, then click on the insert button and close the box. (2) Another way (this works with other Windows programs as well) is to use the "Alt" key and four numbers - making sure to use your numeric keypad, not the numbers on the top of the keyboard.Using the numeric keypad, hold down the Alt key, hit the Zero key and then three additional numbers in succession. For example for © Copyright, hold down Alt, press the number 0, then press the numbers 1, 6, 9. Then you can let up the Alt key. Copyright (©) is Alt, 0, 1, 6, 9 Trademark (TM) is Alt, 0, 1, 5, 3 Registered (®) is Alt, 0, 1, 7, 4 Bullet is Alt, 0, 1, 4, 9 Ellipsis (...) is Alt, 0, 1, 3, 3"N" Dash (-) is Alt, 0, 1, 5, 0"M" Dash (longer -) is Alt, 0, 1, 5, 1 Cents (¢) is Alt, 0, 1, 6, 2 One-half (½) is Alt, 0, 1, 8, 9 French accent (é) is Alt, 0, 2, 3, 3 French accent (à) is Alt, 0, 2, 2, 4 German accent (ü) is Alt, 0, 2, 5, 2 Spanish accent (ñ) is Alt, 0, 2, 4, 1 Switch fonts to Zapf Dingbats to get these symbols: Heart symbol is Alt 0, 1, 7, 0 Check box is Alt, 0, 1, 1, 1 Scissors is Alt, 0, 3, 4

Apple and Marketing and Promotion
We have a puppy! It is a white mini schnauzer. Her name is Apple,(because she is white, like the Mac, got it?) It is amazing how we get ourselves thinking about the puppy and doing things for the puppy all the time. Suddenly it became the highlight in our lives. It demands a lot of work too. Vaccines, food time, do we take her with us or do we leave at home? Change of schedules etc. And it is just a puppy! But it is fun and we do it. We also spend a lot of time looking Apple play, Apple running, Apple learning. We enjoy every minute of it. Apple is good at marketing herself. She runs to us, give kisses and act cute most of the time. When she tilts her head and look right at you, you just can’t help petting her. I have to say she is really good at promoting herself. When people are around her, they are all about her. Maybe it is because she does whatever she does with passion and authenticity. My question is: Do you promote yourself and your business in such effective way? Do people stop what they are doing to pay attention to you? Are you in their mind when they think about a service or product like yours? Do you market and promote your business right? The right marketing will change people’s mind, but the right promotion will change people’s behavior. We didn’t plan to have a puppy, but when we got Apple in our arms and she kissed us, we changed our minds and got her. (Good Marketing). The way she behaves, asks for treats and comes after us, made changes in our behavior. We changed our habits to be able to have the puppy close to us most of the day. (very good promotion). For Apple this is just being natural. It is the way she sees things and get what she wants. It is part of being Apple. Have you reached this level of expertise with your marketing and promotion? Are they just part of who you are?
