Marketing: We sell everything!

We were driving to our office the other day when we saw this huge banner sign in a store that said:

“We sell Everything”

We had to stop and take a picture. How silly is that? Why am I ever going to stop there? Do they sell pet food? Lingerie? Tools? Shoes? Even if they did, would this be a good marketing approach? No, no, no.

If you try to sell everything, or sell to everyone you are in a path to failure. This doesn’t work. Online it is even worse, but unfortunately, a lot of people try that. Those are the same that after a while say the internet doesn’t work. Please my friend, focus, focus, focus and, narrow, narrow, narrow.

Define what you do and to whom you do it. Gender, age, income and above all, interests. When marketing, think like if you were talking just to one person. Who is this person, how is she like and how should you talk to her.

Believe me, it is going to work a lot better. We had to turn the car to take the picture in front of the store. Guess what? No one inside. Just the employees.

You are right. We need to undestand our customer completely and then we need to focus on a part. And then we need to address their needs with precise positioning in the market.
