A new kind of media trading at Switch Planet
Switch Planet is a barter system site where you may switch or borrow dvds, cds, games and books with other users. This is not the only option online for this kind of site, there are many like Craigslist and Peerflix, but Switch Planet offers a twist: it helps society and the environment.
When you go to their website, you’ll see that their mission is right at your left and if you click, you’ll read: It is our goal to establish SwitchPlanet.com as a premier online community that is committed to helping reduce the impact waste is having on the planet by trading the things we no longer use to get the things we want.
“Use more…waste less.”
Social Responsibility
- Reducing environmental waste - Helping those who need it most - Support arts/culture and education
Well, we can only say kudos to that! Traders can opt to donate any amount they trade or not. They are not the first website to do that, others like Squidoo also do the same, but it is a nice thing anyway. It is a good option for people that have a way of contributing with some organizations instead of having dvds collecting dust in the garage.
This website is fairly new, it started in February 2007, ranks 32,400 on Alexa and has a PR5, which shows it is becoming popular really fast.
They also offer a good refund policy in case any item arrives damaged. The site also has friends groups and forums to improve communication among users and to allow them to comment on the products.
The profiles page also increases the engagement with users.
I though the website as a whole is very clean and easy to use and worth a try.

I saw this video on Dipping the Blogpond blog and I was really impressed. When we hear we shouldn't judge a book by its cover and we do it anyway, we should stop and think again. This video is a perfect example. When you see the judges in disbelief, it is great. Like so many of us, the guy has a hidden talent and no one believes in him, but he tries anyway.
While I was researching for a TV interview I ran across this data that I think is very interesting, so I decided to share with you.
●50% of women-owned firms have websites.
●Key reasons for relying on the internet include the ability to open up a wider range of business opportunities and the increased flexibility of time and schedule that internet affords.
●The internet sees no prejudice.
●While most women owned firms are engaged in ecommerce, they are more likely to purchase goods and services for their businesses online (75%) than to sell their products pr services online (52%).
I was talking to a friend over sushi the other day and he asked me what was my biggest marketing challenge.
I told him it was explaining to people what I do, since what I do is a very new profession. He has a printing business. When he says that to people, they instantly get it. They know what he does. The same doesn’t happen when I tell people I’m an internet strategist. Their first reaction is to ask me if I build websites, and the second is to think that an internet strategist is the same as an internet marketer.
We are living in a time where new professions pop-up every day. According to former secretary of Education, Richard Riley, the top 10 jobs that will be in high demand in 2010 didn’t exist in 2004.
So, I’m probably not the only one facing this dilemma. This is a little effort to point out today the basic differences in this confusion.
My work is to create a roadmap for a business to be able to achieve high performance online. To achieve that, we combine our knowledge on consumer behavior and future trends with our knowledge of the online tools that applied to my client’s business would allow him to outsmart his competition. We design a roadmap that if followed will bring him extraordinary results in his industry for a long time.
So, it is a mix of consumer psychology, market trends, internet marketing, social media tools, branding and positioning . When applied, positions that company in such a way, that no matter what tools will be in use tomorrow, only minor shifts will be necessary.
The main focus is on consumer behavior, positioning, usability and end-to-end control over their online business process. Then the tools come, with a specific strategy to make them work together.
We ask: What is out there? What is coming? How will people react? How do you want to be perceived? How to do it? Whom will you talk to? How? What do they want? Why? What are you willing to do? How to combine that with online tools?
In a nutshell, we prepare businesses for the future, having always the consumer behavior as the starting point.
Since today is Friday, I'll go light, with some music. I want to show you the Zimmers. A group that is in the top 40. The cool thing is, the lead singer is 100 years old and the rest of the band is just a little younger. Today, when I got this video on YouTube, they had 2,855,175 views. I remember years ago when my sister was working in a consumer research firm, that she used to say they wouldn't interview people over 50. People over 50 didn't change habits and was of no interest in consumer research. The consumer changed a lot in the last few years. Business changed a lot and the way we do business too. If you still think like my sister used to, it is time to CHANGE.

Isn't it nice? When customers come to you? When you don't even have to think about cold calling? We have anotehr teleseminar coming called: "Getting Customers to come to you." We'll talk a lot about branding and positioning online and offline. A lot of tips on how to become "the" expert in your industry and how to let people know that. I hope to see you there! This is a short post, I know. I've to go back to my inbox to delete the spams before I head to the office. Yes, I have filters in place, but nothing keep those Viagra stuff out of my way.
I just had to put another video about this computer. I keep thinking all that is ahead in terms of technology and all the possibilities to us. It is just amazing.
We were driving to our office the other day when we saw this huge banner sign in a store that said:
“We sell Everything”
We had to stop and take a picture. How silly is that? Why am I ever going to stop there? Do they sell pet food? Lingerie? Tools? Shoes? Even if they did, would this be a good marketing approach? No, no, no.
If you try to sell everything, or sell to everyone you are in a path to failure. This doesn’t work. Online it is even worse, but unfortunately, a lot of people try that. Those are the same that after a while say the internet doesn’t work. Please my friend, focus, focus, focus and, narrow, narrow, narrow.
Define what you do and to whom you do it. Gender, age, income and above all, interests. When marketing, think like if you were talking just to one person. Who is this person, how is she like and how should you talk to her.
Believe me, it is going to work a lot better. We had to turn the car to take the picture in front of the store. Guess what? No one inside. Just the employees.
