In celebration of the Renaissance Women and Visionaries who make a difference in Utah, the Renaissance Society, American Express and the Women’s Business Center will host a High Tea at Hotel Grand America on August 30, 2006 where Renaissance Awards will be given to outstanding business women in the community. The Sloan Awards for Business Excellence in Workplace Flexibility will also be presented to seven Utah companies who have been chosen by the Families and Work Institute and the Twiga Foundation as exceptional companies in providing flexibility to their employees.
For the past twelve months, Marilyn Tang, the ‘grand dame’ of women owned businesses and the seven other enterprising women who make up the Renaissance Society have encouraged women to join the society and help further the cause of the Women’s Business Center (WBC) in Salt Lake City.
The Renaissance Society members, all of whom have paid $500 to become charter members support the WBC’s mission in helping women succeed in business. With federal funding cuts in the recent years the Women’s Business center had to face funding challenges and the Renaissance Society envisions building a network of supporters to insure the future of the WBC.
The Women’s Business Center is geared to helping women (and men) start a business and grow their businesses. Our clients are small business owners or want to be small business owners. This is a group that needs a lot of nurturing, which we offer through counseling and our mentoring group, Women’s Network for Entrepreneurial Training. We assist start-ups through all the phases from determining the type of business entity they should create, to registering and licensing, writing a business plan and marketing plan, doing their cash flow projections, educating them on finances and the loan process, and to marketing their business, mainly through individual or small group counseling. Our counseling is free and scholarships/fee waivers are available for those trainings where we do have a fee. Approximately 35-40per cent of our clients are low-moderate income.
The proceeds from the High Tea at Grand America will benefit the Women’s Business Center. Members of the Renaissance Society say the support system and the fundraising are necessary. The Salt Lake/Ogden metropolitan area is the fastest growing area in the country for women-owned firms and Utah is the fastest growing state in the country for women-owned firms, according to the Center for Women’s Business Research. The WBC is the only business counseling center in Utah catering specifically to women. With this in mind, the WBC needs the support from the community to sustain itself and continue providing free counseling and training to women in business.
The ten Renaissance Awards will be given to Anne Burkholder, Catherine J Wheeler, Constance Lundburg, Holly Mullen, Linda Kruse, Lynda Coleman, Mayor JoAnn Seghini, Nancy Tessman, Stella Allen and Theresa Martinez.
The seven Sloan Awards for workplace flexibility will be given to –Tom Bacus, Carter and Burgess, Inc; Elizabeth Rontino, Cooper Roberts Simonsen Architects; Hydee Willis, Creative Expressions; Constance Lundberg, Jones, Waldo, Holbrook & McDonough, PC; Kate Reddy, McKinnon-Mulherin, Inc ( 2 time winner); Sandy Banks, Stayner, Bates & Jensen, P.C and Kate Sullivan, Utah Food Services. This year’s honorable mentions go to Anne Ivie, ARUP Laboratories and Sara Dietz, Enterprise Rent-A-Car.
The High Tea will be hosted on August 30, 2006 at Hotel Grand America. Registration and Silent Auction start at 3:00 pm. Program and Tea Service between 4:00 – 6:00 pm.
